In the same way that cyclists only see bad drivers and drivers only see bad cyclists, thus contractors only see bad agents and agents only see bad contractors. The good in each camp go unnoticed. In any profession you will find those who are good at what they do and others who give the profession a bad name.

I think it is fair to say that many agents have been guilty of sharp practises. Enough for ContractorUK to publish a Top 10 (click here ) and it is a sad fact that I have experienced most of these first-hand as a contractor over the past 4 years.

I would never seek to tar a group of people with the same brush and I try to shy away from generalisations. Obviously others do not and I think it is a fair point to make when I say that most people have experienced the negative side of recruitment agents at some stage, so it doesn't surprise me that there have been some negative comments made here.

Don't get too disheartened then, Sam. You just happen to be in a profession that some people love to hate. We all know that agents fulfil a useful role and save us having to hunt for jobs, but the bad experiences many have had leave a bitter taste in the mouth and make it hard for some people to be objective.

Quick question for recruitment agents: Do agents' phone software allow them to blacklist a number so that it is automatically sent to voicemail?

I pretty much agree with everything you said in your previous longer post except that about passing on information. IME when an agent tells me about a lead that they are working on or will be putting my CV in for they ask me to keep it to myself and I usually honour that pledge. I do get asked about what roles I am in for by other agents and I give them very vague details but will not tell them who the client is because it's the other agent's lead.

If asked who the client is directly I will politely tell them that I’ve been asked to keep it to myself. Most of the time they respect that because they know that I will do the same for them with other agents when they tell me about a lead they are working on.

Ok. I just thought it was strange that when I phoned a certain agent on the mobile I would get bounced to voicemail within 1 ring without fail, yet if I witheld my number and called straight back it would ring normally and then get answered by a colleague. It just got me suspicious.

The truth is out there.

Sounds as if he has a phone that shows the number of the incoming caller and he recognises yours.

If the agent is routing his calls to a smart mobile it is possible. I can get software for my P800 which allows for black and white caller lists to be defined - if you are in the black list you will be cut off within a single ring. This can include 'number withheld' too.
