After reading a couple of other threads, I'm interested in the pro's and con's of alteratives to Micro$oft's browser and mail client.

I've heard firefox(?) opera etc etc, but what about mail clients?

I use Outlook at work, and OE at home.

Outlook at the office is pretty much wearing triple thickness titanium body armour (you get the idea!) but OE at home is proabably a little more vulnerable (but not too bad).... what are the alternatives, and as I said, the pro's and con's?

One of the biggest problems lies in receiving attachments from other people using Outlook with html formatted email. Outlook puts a whole load of crud (winmail.dat) which many other clients can't read, and they then stop processing the attachments. They are indeed there, and will magically reappear if you forward the email to an Outlook user, but it's a pain. The fix has to be implemented by the sender - simply use Outlook with plain text, rather than html, and Firefox etc works just fine. Think of it as yet another lock-in from Micro$oft....

I use Firefox for web browsing. It's mail client sibling is Thunderbird.

I've also heard many good things about The Bat!

I use Opera for a web browser, but that's just because it's better. I use a full copy of outlook, and externally virus scanned email services.

Firefox is excellent.

I used to use Opera, but Firefox appears to be as good and doesn't have the adverts....

Any screenshots of Thunderbird?

I may migrate if I like the look of it and it does everything Outlook does. Outlook is being a bugger, not closing down and leaving outlook.exe running in the processes, when I kill it it then takes ages to restart when I open Outlook later on. Even have the shutdown add-in from Daveswesbite.com but that doesn't fix it.

Have been using Thunderbird for some months now. Prior to that, the mail client from Mozilla.

I've just installed Thunderbird.....I'll see how it goes.

Although it's already impressed me over Outlook.

Neptune theme for Firefox and Thunderbird, very smart.

Another vote for Thunderbird, it has been great so far, small, fast stable. Kicks Outlook and Notes into touch.

I used the original Mozilla suite before I switched to Kmail (works only on Linux). Mozilla is the open-source version of the Netscape browser.

The Mozilla suite is basically the basis from which Firefox and Thunderbird were forked. I understand that they are intended to be lightweight stand-alone applications, where Mozilla is all in one: browser, email client, and html composer.

And Firefox/Thunderbird are set to replace the Mozilla Suite sometime after Moz 1.6. More info
