Feeling a bit thick, here.

For some reason this week IE6 has decided to open all video links (seemingly irrespective of the precise file type) as if they are web pages rather than just kicking off the appropriate viewer.

Any ideas?

Tools>Internet Options>Advanced Tab>Multimedia>play Video in Web Pages

Uncheck.

Yeah - tried that, but it still insists on trying (and failing!) to open a web page.

Actually, you've got me intrigued now..... I've just checked my own settings.... My IE (6) has that option ticked.... yet video links still play in their respective players rather than in a web page?!

My machine at home will play videos fine, but seems to randomly decide whether to open the appropriate player or virtically split the explorer window and play it in the left pane...

You could try right clicking on a .wmv file that is on your machine, then Open With. This will bring up the list of applications that are associated with that file type. Choose Media Player (or whichever).

See if links work then...

Been there, done that! Right click/open with works fine in Windoze Explorer, but IE6 still insists on trying to open a webpage.
