I was going to get a kindle, although I do like a 'book' to read. So was doing some looking around and Amazon do the Kindle software for laptops and mobile devices.
So I have it on my laptop and iPhone and it works a treat. OK so on a phone screen it's small and you are turning pages often but it's no big shakes, and saved me £100+ to boot.

If the other half is looking for something that does all sorts and is also an ereader then this is perhaps not what you're looking for but if all you're after is a book replacement then it's second to none.

Books are cheap. Also read a fair few free ones.

I purchased my wife a Sony eReader with the touch screen which she loves. She downloads books from places like Waterstones so a great choice.Does the kindle only accept ebooks from amazons store?

Battery life is great, it works well even in direct sunlight, and is easy to use.
About twice the price of the Kindle but not as locked down and it does have a touch screen....

It's what I use for my iPad. Good bit of software.I has 2 kindles (3's), on amazon.com
1500 books on them, battery life is great, reading is a better all round experience than a paper book, its lighter and more convenient.
Ok the battery doesnt last for ever (a month or so) and the interface is woeful for anything other than straight reading.
You can load any books onto it that arnt DRM'd, we use calibre to organise and convert to mobi, and kindle collection manager.
You can get a nice cover (I have an eco-nique hemp one) that makes it more 'book' like.

Yes. And make them available. We are in the asia pacific 'region' on amazon.com and often the books are available in the US online but not for us! They will even ship paper books but not sell us the ebook, which seems stupid.As for price, a paperback here is $25-40, an ebook on amazon is $10-15 so it works out a lot cheaper for us (UK pay VAT on ebooks, not paper books!)
And TBH I'm over storing and dealing with paper books, I have 1000's but they are going asap
