Server Side Anti-Spam

Righty.
We use Symantec Mail Security - Server Side. Its shite do not bother with it. The anti-virus is OK - the anti-spam is hard to configure, has loads of False Positives and is basically - rubbish.
Demon Internet use Brightmail which filters the spam before it gets to my home PC. Its completely brilliant.
Unfortunately it costs a mint so we haven't got it for our corporate e-mail server.
We are currently trialling iHateSpam (Client Side) which seems really good at $20 per person. The server side edition is $500....we don't have a big enough spam problem to justify that so we haven't got it yet. But I believe that it *should* be pretty good judging by the quality of the client side tools...

I cannot recommend ASSP strongly enough. Free, dead reliable, open source (it's in Perl, so runs more-or-less everywhere including Windows & Unix), web based admin interface, does Bayesian filtering + whitelisting, the author is accessible & helpful and it's well documented;

Perl on windows can have disastrous side effects tho.
Whilst a very strong language, it is a very brutal one too, hogging lots of CPU whilst running, and if miscoded (admittedly like alot of other languages) can REALLY hurt the server.
Depending on how much mail is going thru the server, AV and Spam can put a substantial strain on the server.
It could be worth considering taking on a small mail server, supplementaly to the Forums Box, reducing the load on the Forums, whilst also safeguarding it against any mishaps.
Personally I use SpamAssasin, but on Nix.

Installing?, no. Training the Bayesian's a pain, but it is with everything that uses Bayesian filters. You need to run at least 1000 pieces of mail through it, although that only took me a couple of days.
I'd go along with another poster, and run it on a seperate server, though.
www.blackspider.com/ is excellent. i haven't had any false positives with it and it doesn't run on your servers it's a dns thing (through mx records or something like that).

....you also get anti-virus in the package....
you don't need to install anything at your end, so no additional cpu load, or stuff to manage....

Basically there is a black list (undesired senders) and white list (trusted senders).
Let's say Ted sets this up on his server.
I send Ted an email.
I receive an autoreply which asks me to confirm that I wish to send the email.
I confirm and my email happily wings its way to Ted's inbox -amongst the 100's of other messages :-)
My email address then gets addeded to Ted's whitelist
so my next email to him goes straight to his inbox.
why does this work ?
Because most Spammers send millions of messages and wont confirm the message. They also hijack other peoples email so this won't work either.

I used to use TMDA, but for exactly the reason you list as a drawback, dumped it in favour of SpamAssassin... also free. I use it in a program delivery script in qmail on linux.... it works very well for any mail I get that doesn't go through MessageLabs......
Hey Karl. I was meaning to speak to you about MessageLabs. I'd like to use it for a customer but it's too damned expensive (like £1.50 per user/month).
Is there any chance you could mail me to discuss whether either that figure can be reduced or a SMTP domain could be split where 1/2 the users used your solution and the other half didn't (I know that will probably be difficult given how ML works).

We use these www.ciphertrust.com/solutions/smb.html . I really can not recommend them enough. We receive and discard over milliions of messages a month as a result of these boxes. With 99% success. They are great and worth every penny.
