Hi all,

quite fancy a mini ipod, but my PC is getting on a bit and only has windows 95 and USB (not USB2.0) any ideas if I'll be able to use the ipod?

Thanks

Michael

nope. You will need USB 2.0 or a firewire port to run the i pod and download music correctly

Why ?

USB2 devices should work fine in USB1.1 slots, just at 12mbit iirc, as opposed to 480mbit.

apart from the USB issue, My mate just got an iPod and it doesn't work with Win98.

So 95 will be out of the question I should think.

Need to get to Win98SE before you can use a "Mass Storage Device" on USB - under which category I believe the iPod will fall.

He's right, you need XP to run the itunes application (the software it works from)

I am sure you could just drag and drop the MP3s over manually tho, as an alternative

*Note, I talk from general Experience, as opposed to iPlop Experience.

Trouble is, Win95/98 probably won't even see it.

But if its a USB device, it will just be detected, given all USB devices are designed with compliency.

Cant see it not detecting it, even if just as a portable hdd.

That's what I thought when trying to extract some (a lot!) files from a Win98 laptop via a USB pen drive.

No can do before Win98SE.

Your iPod will work on USB 1.1 (sort of) but will be as slow as a dog, and some of the songs may fail to load from your PC.

That was my experience anyway. It did actually work (most of the time) with USB1.1 but was painfully slow, and on occasion songs would simply fail to load and I'd get a bizarre error message. £25 and 5 minutes later I installed a USB2.0 card and WOW - what a difference. Super fast and no crashing.

I'd seriously avoid using your iPod across USB1.1. It's a doddle to upgrade to USB2.0.

Win95 doesn't support USB. Win95 oem rel2 or Win95b doesn't support USB properly (some would say at all ). Win98 has much better support.

Try a firewire card, but frankly, I don't think you have a hope of running an iPOD on Win 95. If you can afford an iPOD, surely you can afford Win XP?

I am said mate and trust me, it doesn't work. Do the decent thing and get yourself a decent new PC. Job's a good'un, no more headaches!
