This has probably been done before, but the search is broken and not loading anything so thats why it could be a repeat.
Anyway, i'm looking for a camera to record some driving, but nothing too large or expensive. To be honest, i'd prefer it to be as small and covert as possible but a cheap price and retain reasonable quality.
As a benchmark, my nokia with it's 3.2mp camera is about 70% of what i need, however the footage is a bit choppy and only supports a low resolution.
I've seen plenty on ebay and youtube, but to be honest, im unsure if these are any good.
I know im asking a lot, but i dont want some £200 fancy thing, just something cheap. I see a lot of these ones from korea or hong kong or whatever on ebay for less than £30 but the round cylinder shaped ones are just a bit too big.

Same here, but I also want one that does motion sensing so I can leave it on in the car whilst parked to act as a form of CCTV.
Must have the capability to be standalone and not need constant external power (ie a good battery life).
I would pay decent money if it had these features as well as the usual road cam benefits.

The cheap chinese electronics you see on ebay will do the job, but the difference is how well and for how long they'll do it on a longer term basis. The reason those unbranded electronics are cheap is partly down to generic electronic components, using the cheapest grades of those and other materials to make the product. I'll hazard a bet that the plastics used in the body won't be UV resistant so over time when placed in your dashboard, they will deteriorate.
what kind of footage are you looking for ? decent HD image quality can be captured and saved to large capacity data cards as pricing for these are nowadays very low indeed - 16GB SD cards for around £20 and from high quality premium brand manufacturers.
There is indeed a few high quality security and trip log type devices on the market. One has motion sensing so can be used to record visually what's happening. For road trip aspects, it comes with software which tracks movements and also a GPS enabled version.

If the small thumb sized devices are all you need, then perhaps look at the better quality brands of those units as their devices will again be better quality than the ultra bargain basement ebay products.

The Novus is a quality product but not cheap. If you are looking for a discreet installation have a look at this one in a Yeti.
