Once a CD is scratched, is there any way of getting rid off the scratch? Is it never going to work again?

Just a wild shot - what about the stuff for getting rid of scratches in furniture? Obviously if the reflective layer is damaged you've had it - but if you can fill the scratch with something clear of the same refractive index...?

If you scatch a CD on it's top surface, then the chances are it'll only be useful as a coaster afterwards. This is because (ignoring the thickness of any label) the track that is read by the laser is about 50 microns from the upper surface. So only a tiny scratch in the top surface can completely destroy hundreds of sections of the track.

Getting a scratch in the lower surface isn't usually quite so hazardous to the info on the CD so it begs the question - why do people insist on putting CDs label side down when they are not in use "to protect them"?

If they are small scratch`s try to polish them out with tooth paste and tooth brush , it works but only

Often the publisher will replace damaged discs free of charge - check your manual! I got a replacement PS2 game out of Electronic Arts this way when a disc got damaged.
