Active Directory Connector (Exchange version)

This is a real long shot, but does anyone on here really, really know the ADC?
I'm not talking about the process of creating regular CA's, more an indepth understanding of what it does at the LDAP level?
I'm currently doing a project for a client and I feel I've 'missed a trick' when using the ADC and have written a custom application to workaround the ADC's behaviour. The solution works but is untidy and I'd just like a second opinion.
