In a nutshell Bittorrent is a piece of software that lets you download files stored on the computers of other people who are also running the same software.
Files available on that network have a unique ID (a hash).
If you want a particular file, you provide the hash to the software, and it seeks out people with that file, and downloads it from them. (Note, whilst you are downloading the bits you don't have from people who do, your software is also letting other people download from you the bits you have but they don't.)
How do you get the Hash for files you want? You have to use a 'tracker' site like Pirate Bay. You can search for something you want, download a very small .torrent file which contains the hash, and provide that to your bittorent software.

BT are under pressure to block access to pirate bay currently. Other trackers are available, but the prirate bay is a high profile one.

Some people (lets be honest, most people) use this system to share copyright stuff, hence it's under fire.

(PS - I know bittorrent is actually a protocol or something, and you use client software to access it, but I'm trying to keep the explaination simple.)

Private sites are the way forward, if you can get an invite.

Well, there is lots of stuff on these sites that are legal, but it would be foolish to pretend that the vast majority is not illegal. I'll admit to using certain sites involving Blackbeard, and the like.

Yup - I've moved it to the Computers section as it's most relevant there (not really a General Gassing discussion smile

Although it won't get closed or deleted as it's a general discussion about torrents. And if it remains as such, then it's not an issue. It's only when people start posting links, or specific references to downloads, which contravenes PH posting rules 5,6 and 10 smile

There are of course fully legal, copyright-free stuff for download. But they tend to get the crappy end of the stick; as mr96 thumbup points out above, BT are trying to restrict access to certain ones. Interesting ongoing thread here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

News groups are a far quicker and safer way to download the same type of stuff you are getting from torrents. Once you try it you'll never go back

Interesting point is that the conditions atached to certain sofware ( eing general so as not to inflame mods) .If I buy goods ,I expect that they are mine ,to transfer as i see fit .Not so with software -you can only put it on a limited amount of computers . Fair -I think not -that's why I won't hesitate to use stuff from these sites .

With the pirate bay if the poster of the torrent has a small skull next to their name it means their uploads have been deemed of a quality high enough for a recommended status.

Presumably you also see nothing wrong with photocopying books & magazines and making copies of CDs, audio files, DVDs, movie files and games so you can hand them out to friends as well ?

What you are buying is a user-licence; which basically means that if you buy a piece of software, then normally you can install that on 2 or more PCs, as long as the software is only being used once at any given time. A typical scenario might be someone who has 2 PCs - maybe a laptop (when out and about) and desktop (when in the office). You would only be using one of them at any given time, therefore that would be OK.

What's not OK is buying a single-user licence and installing on everyones machine in the office to use as and when they wish.

Frankly, I'm astonished you're so openly admitting it. It's theft, plain and simple. Anyway - getting off the discussion now smile

Honestly -No.Any decent firm would see this as me advertiing their product .If it's excessively expensive - then they might look at reducing the price -and that's what's wrong with the software industry .

You mean like when I was little, and we taped the charts, or went to the library and photocopied stuff on the library photocopy machine? I take it you've never lent a friend a cd and they copied it?

Agreed - but it does fall under these (amongst others) :

and also deprives the rights holder of legitimate income, thus reducing their incentive to produce anything in the future.

The Sun newspaper sells 2.8 million copies per day.

It is read by 7.5 million people per day.

Therefore 4.7 million people per day are guilty of copyright infringement.

How do you stop this? If I read a magazine in my dentist's surgery, am I guilty?
