Came to turn the computer on earlier, and instead of normal single beep it does several beeps, then whirrs a bit and switches itself off.

Switched it back on and it starts in safe mode. Also at some point came up with the little drum and 'updating settings' icon.

Have tried shutting it down and restarting, but it still starts in safe mode.

Any ideas as to what might have caused it and how I can get it to start in normal mode?

Thanks

Restart, press F8 repeatedly until something happens, there should be the option screen of 'Do you want to start in safe mode, boot up normally, etc.'. Press whatever button corresponds to boot up normally.

Hi Nige,

Thanks, but have already tried holding down CTRL at restart, which brings up option menu, and selected 1 (normal mode) but still starts in safe mode.

The number of times the PC beeps corresponds to an error code. Read this for more details;

Thanks for the help guys.

Have just got it sorted out after it suddenly occured to me out of the blue that it wasn't actually stuck in safe mode because it didn't say safe mode. Doh!

What had happened when it did start in safe mode is that the display settings got changed to low quality and different resolution so when it then started in normal mode it looked all wrong.

Have returned the settings to what they were and it now looks fine.
