Music downloading Questions...
Discussion
hi
1. if i downloaded music files in formats mp3 + wma, then copied them onto a recordable cdrom, would they all play on a typical hi-fi unit?
2. can anybody recommend a site containing a big collection of songs one can pick from an download for free, with no spyware hassle. Tho i dont mean as in downloading whole albums, as i'm just after certain tracks on them, so dont need the whole album.
3. as i'm a recent newbie at all this, i'd appreciate any tech advice tips etc.

1. You need a special headunit to play MP3 encoded CD's. You need to convert them to audio before you burn them onto the CD. Loads of tools will do this automatically, such as MusicMatch Jukebox, I also thing Win XP does it too.
2. I dont know of any such sites, that are 'free' Your est bet would be to get a copy of Kazaa Lite (a bit like Napster used to be) - but there is always a security risk with such file sharing platforms.
HTH - someone with more knowledge will be here at work time

Follow this link, scroll down the page, select Kazaa Lite 2.4.3. to install then follow through to install Kazaa on your P.C.
www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=kazaalite
Masses of single track files with no spyware, open with Windows Media or Real Player and they will copy straight to CD rom and will play in standard CD player.

MP3 and WMA tracks would need to be converted into CD Audio tracks (.wav) to enable them to play on a typical domestic HiFi CD player.
CD burning programs like Nero can do this conversion for you, providing you select "Audio CD" from the initial menu.
I think Windows Media player will also convert the files if you use the "Copy music to CD" option.

HI ALL
1. how can i prevent or remove the occasional tick sounds i get when playing back a downloaded mp3 music track. [ps- i have onboard yamaha sound, play via winamp, an out thru my hi-fi speakers.]
2. i've noticed that various copies of the same track have different file sizes - so what are the implications of this, other than quicker load times.
3. ive also noted that some tracks are much louder than others, an so wondered how i might equalise every tracks volume level when writing a batch to cdr, as otherwise their loudness will up an down across the cd!
4. you know when youv'e 'partly' downloaded a song, an you get a file containing 'so much' of it as downloaded thus far, is there a way to make that file still 'playable' though its incomplete?
ie- my p2p prog places in-progress downloaded songs into files like - 'download10885662436084815.dat' - so what can be also done with that when half done for me to play it?

I suspect that the "clicks" are defects from when the track was originally ripped (from CD).... if you rip a CD at high speed, or rip a CD that is dirty, this can often happen..... as for removing them, it can be done.... but may be easier to download the track from a different source!

If two tracks of identical length have different file sizes, then they have been ripped at different bitrates. The bigger the file size, then the greater the bitrate, and the better quality the sound.
Personally I prefer a minimum of 192k, but some people are happy with 128k.

Some burning software has this kind of function as an option when burning an audio CD. Failing that, software like Cool Edit Pro or SoundForge will enable you to easily normalize volume levels.

Change the filename to have the extension that it should have when completed. For example, if you are downloading an MP3 track, change the filename of the .dat to a .mp3. Remember that once you have done this, Kazzaa cannot "complete" the download. Ideally, make a copy of the .dat file to a different location before renaming it.

thanx Meeja - thats much appreciated.

BUT SOME NEW QUERYS...
1. as i use 'winoncd' to copy over music files to cdr, i wonder if 'nero' [as mentioned above], was the only prog that auto-converts mp3/wma files to cda when burning to cd?
2. is there a best time to search+download songs over the www as via a p2p prog?
3. anyone know of a free prog that can convert various audio formats, eg- wma to mp3 + wav?
4. any here know of a free prog that can allow editing of music tracks, AND one that can increase their loudness as some tracks are recorded far too quitely.
thanx all, rsvp
