can anyone help? i have a 1 meg NTL connection that i split three ways with a linksys router to my pc (xp), my file server (xp), and another machine (98).
the trouble is that every 3 or so hours, the connection drops. downloads fail and all i get is errror 404s'. 99% of the time this can be remedied by unplugging my router and plugging it back in again, which, is a major nuisance.
my question therefore is: do routers really go loco like this? it seems to be the problem - is it? could there be anything ive missed before i shell out for a new one? is there a way of testig the thing?
TIA

Simple answer is yes. Basically the router has some software in it and software is written by humans who make mistakes ---> voila dodgy router. This can manifest itself in all manner of ways. Or it could just be a hardware fault on the router. Could also be at NTL end but unlikely if a router reset fixes it.
Things to try
Most routers have an IP address assigned for management so when you lose the connection can you ping the router? Can you login to the management page? Does it still have a link light to the cable modem?
Check what you current firmware is on the router and then check to se what the latest available is and what fixes have been applied since your version. It might be obvious from the fix list but it might not. I generally recommend the latest firmware unless you have a good reason not to run it. Unfortunately these good reasons normally come from experience of the newer firmware not doing something it should. Bit of a catch 22 if you haven't tried any more of these model routers

hi MM,
thanks for your reply. the funny thing is that the router worked fine for a good year or two, but now i have the irritating intermittent fault. ive tried updating the firmware but to no avail. what i will do though, is follow your suggestion and try to log into it next time it goes down. looks like it may indeed be bin time for this particular piece of hardware
