Dont know if this is the right place but here goes.

My O2 pay monthly Iphone is now due for an upgrade. Just been on their website and the traiffs are lousy - especially the 500Mb / month data. I am currently on unlimited data and I would like to keep it. I had a look around and saw the T-mobile "Full Monty".

Any thoughts would be appreciated especially with regards to

(1) Speaking to O2 and getting a better package - I tried back in November for my wife to no avail.
(2) Comparison of data speeds and coverage between O2 and T-mobile
(3) Probably just as important - comparing voice coverage between O2 and T-mobile

been with O2 since 1997 and it looks like I am going to do the unthinkable and switch to t-mobile.

Regards
Richard

If you're after a data plan, the best provider (providing you get coverage!) is actually 3. They offer a truly unlimited data plan with no speed throttling. Be careful of T-Mobile as I've read that their 'Full Monty' plan has a 1.8Mbps or 1Mbps speed cap in place.

I am in a similar boat to you. I was with t-mobile a few years ago, but found the reception poor in my area, but especially more so inside buildings, so I switched to o2. Over that time they have dropped my unlimited data down to 500mb per month, which is fine as I never seem to go over that. I was meant to get free wifi with BT Openzone and the cloud, but the BT openzone never worked, the cloud did, but now o2 have removed that service as well.

Since I am happy with o2’s coverage, just not the limitations they are putting on data and their pricing, so I am looking at Tesco as they run over o2’s network and seem to offer a better price plan than o2.

I was in same situation as you and went with giffgaff they run on o2 network so coverage is the same as you already get and is £10/month for 250mins unlimited texts and UNLIMITED DATA, or £15 for 400mins and unlimited texts & data. Port your number over too. :-) http://giffgaff.com/

Have a look at the other deals around when you find a good one, ring o2 and ask for your pac code they should ask why your leaving. Tell then you have found a better deal and they usual better it with no questions.

Bloke at work got an iphone 4s on £35 a month for free with 1000 minutes and unlimited text, by making up a deal which orange offered.

Interesting. Where did you read that?

It first came from T-Mobile's own twitter feed, believe it or not! They have then since furiously backpedalled saying that it's not capped at all but many on the plan are complaining that they are in fact capped at 1mbps.

I myself am on T-Mobile but I joined a few months back when they were offering truly unlimited Internet for plans over £25. At first I was put on the lowest speed cap which is around 300kbps! Many calls to them to remove this cap resulted in going almost nowhere until I threatened to send everything back and cancel under the distance selling regulations. Then the cap got removed pretty damn quickly biggrin. However, there's the higher level speed cap which is around 1.8mbps, which is where I'm at right now. If I didn't get a bloody good deal with T-Mobile I'd be off. There's a few other things that irk me about T-Mobile too, like the fact that the Internet seems to be overloaded quite a bit (London) and you have to pay for voicemails (although Hullomail is a workaround). Also some dispute between Lycamobile I think and T-Mobile has resulted in certain Lycamobile numbers being charged as international numbers even though they look like any other ordinary UK mobile number!

I have already made up my mind to move when my contract is up but that won't be for at least another 18 months so they have some time to get their act in order but I'm not hopeful.

I stuck with O2 in the end when my unlimited data iPhone 3GS contract ended a month or so ago.

Looked at giffgaff but you need to remember to top up a goody bag, there is no contract style option.

In the end I accept the following - iPhone 4S 32gb with 300 mins, unlimited O2 calls, 500 text and 500mb. £26.50/m for 12 months. Phone cost £210. Sold 2 year old 3GS on eBay for £180.

Not a deal for everyone, but it suits me. You can't exceed 500mb without being asked to purchase more. This is £6.50 for 500 I think, only £5 if bought monthly. Some months I won't need it so no sense in buying it in advance!
