The lap top I am using has sockets for "mic" and "headphones" but no "line in" I would like to record from my hifi to the lap top. I have tried using the mic socket, but it just seems to be recording noise. Is there a way round this?

try enabling Advanced controls in the full volume control. There may be a way to switch the gain over on the mic socket.
Other than that, maybe consiger an external sound cardy type thing.

Yep..... the Sound Blaster MP3+ is perfect for stuff like this...... and not ridiculously expensive either.
