I keep getting what appear to be bounce messages from emails that as far as I’m aware I have not sent. For example:

Mail Delivery (failure myemail@mydomain.com)

RAV AntiVirus has deleted this file because it contained dangerous code!

With an attachment ____warn.txt

Is this just another spam ruse?

Someone with your email address in their Name & Address book has caught a virus which is forging the originators address from NAB entries, including yours.

There's nothing you can do about it.

This is currently a major problem. We are currently receiving over 1000 such messages a day for the UK alone. Worldwide is over ten times that figure but the actual action we can take is very limited.

The problem here is the mail server admins who have their servers set up to alert the sender when ta virus is found.

Since all viruses fake the From address, this results in millions of messages flying all over the world that are pointless.

If we alerted the sender, we would be sending upwards of 30,000 messages a day to people telling them they sent us a virus, when they clearly didn't!

Bugger

The annoying thing is I think most of this is coming from a business associate that sent an email to his entire contact list announcing his new business venture. Now I'm get bounced emails back from all the people on his contact list. Does this mean the guy who sent the email has the virus or one of the people on his contact list has it?

There's no easy way to tell, I'm afraid.
