Java JVM only ?

I'm trying to do a LearnDirect course and am struggling with the PC setup.
My laptop already has Java 2 Runtime Environment installed. This apparently causes a conflict with the LearnDirect software. The recommendation is to uninstall JRE and install only Java Virtual Machine 4.79.2436 or higher.
According to the java.com website, it is no longer possible to install JVM only.
Has anyone got any thoughts / recommendations or am I resigned to asking for a refund and ploughing through a tutorial book ?
