Can anyone recommend a web hosting company or site where I can compare such companies? We have outsourced the design of one of our websites but their hosting costs seem very high. Does £300 p/a seem like a lot to you for web space, email, bandwidth, backups, MySQL databasing, GD and PHP, and webalizer usage reports?

We cant host it ourselves as we dont support MySQL. They are willing to host it on a 3rd party server but the server has to meet the following requirements:

PHP version 4 or later

GD image libraries version 2 or later

MySQL version 3.23 or later

We also require the source code to be encrypted.

Either Windows or UNIX environments, provided the above requirements are met.

Thanks for any advice.

We use oneandone.co.uk and they seem pretty damned good I have to say.

I use www.xsession.com

It's run by one of the guys in my office. Loads of new servers going in at the minute as well.

How much bandwidth per month ?

Support hours ?

Webalizer /php/mysql are all opensource and are free to download and install on a unix server.

Most Linux CDs come with all of the above.
Apache is the opensource webserver which runs on most unix servers.

Good Luck,

Ramesh

www.Register1.net/vds.php

With a nice SSL Cert, you will be away.

www.serverstream.net/bargaindeal.html if you fancy a Dedicated Hardware Box for ultimate security.

Seems very reasonable to me. It'll cost you more in time/money to find a better deal and set it up.

Thanks. I was aware of that though. We dont run nix boxes so its a question of finding a hosting company with all the above (as well as the GD Image Libraries which are vital and no one seems to have running on their servers).

Think you're spot on there Ted. I've been trying for a couple of days to find reliable company which has the right services running. P'raps I'll just stick with the design companies package.
