Anyone got any hints? I go to shut down (XP) and it gets to "logging off" and then just hangs. Occasionally it will work but most of the time doesn't. I installed Zone Alarm and it was ok for a few days but has now started doing it again.

Cheers

It could well be Zone Alarm that's stopping your PC shutting down, there are quite a few 'known issues' concering this program and XP. It may be worth logging on to Zone Alarm's website and seeing if there is an update/fix for this prob.
On a different note, I installed McAfee Viruscan on my collegues Win '98 PC at work, and if the viruscan is running in the background, the PC will not switch off! There is no way around this one on '98, apart from turning the viruscan off manually before shutting down!

When I bought my PC (3 yrs ago) Mine wouldn't shut down properly. Had to get a 'patch' sent from Dell. Using windows ME. Maybe there is a patch 4 it.

Win95 and Win98 often had problems shutting down, and from what I remember ME was a real dog too.

I'm surprised you're having problems with XP though. Have you tried doing a Windows Update and/or a system repair?

Awww man, Zone Alarm and McAfee, I'm surprised the poor PC starts up, never mind not shutting down.

My advice, for what it's worth, would be to uninstall completely Zone Alarm and Mcafee, including the empty remaining directories, then clean up the rest of the PC with something like Internet Sweeper Pro and finally install and run PestPatrol. Restart.

Then install Blackice Defender and AVG, both free.

Hopefully this will help

There should be a log created for this, I would bet on a service not being terminated....Try starting in safe mode, and see if you can shut down ok..
Try also MSconfig, then disable all teh startup items not used by MS, then add them one by one, rebooting in between of course, you should then find your culprit.
Or use the powertoys, or Xsetup and set teh minimum time for killing an app to say 5 seconds, that should work as well.

My broadband modem causes my computer to hang. It'll only shut down when the modem is switched off first. Might be worth looking into as well.

Isn't the Blackice back-track a bit of an own goal though?
