I know we have a few resident web designers here...

I was wondering what is considered to be the best tool for the development of big company websites these days.

that is considered the best by many people, but I, and most programmers, prefer something like text/notepad and a browser.

Depends what you mean by big companies.

The company I work for tends to now use .Net for clever stuff with the html bit done in the favourite text editor of the coder. A lot of the website management is controlled by databases and style sheets so changes to actual site code is minimal.

If you look at a sales based web site these really are Content management solutions, with normally a bought in CM backend solution.

The answer question I believe you are really asking is:
Dreamweaver MX and/ or Visual Interdev and/ or Visual Studio.NET
