Network Cables

As I understand it, only 4 of the 8 wires in cat5 cable actually do anything. Is this true, and if so, which 4 are redundant?

Also, does anybody know how to "capture" a printer port in Windows XP?

the blue/bluewhite , brown/brownwhite wires are not used...
