I have an EPoX 8KHA (not sure if it's a 'plus' model or not) motherboard which according to Sandra is running at 2x100 MHz FSB speed.

Apparently I can also use 2x 133MHz... what will happen if I change the jumpers?

The motherboard manual states that only PC1600 DDR SDRAM should be used with a FSB speed of 100MHz, but I've got PC2100 - should I change the FSB speed??!

If anyone could tell me what kind of CPU I could stick in there for a bit more oomph I'd be might appreciative I'm planning on 2-2.4GHz if possible... I do know it has to be AMD

Upping the motherboard speed should be fine as long as the CPU will take it. The RAM will run at the lower speed anyway. If you do want to upgrade your CPU I have a Athlon 2000XP going beging for next to sod all if you want. Just e-mail me.

PC2100 is PC1600 running at 133 (133 * 16 you see)

If you change the FSB it will change it for both the CPU and the memory bus.

If your CPU supports it, ramp it up...

Well I changed the jumpers - and it wouldn't boot

So I played with the BIOS , changing various speed things - and I royally it.

Next step was to remove the battery...

Back to square 1!

If its a 1200 chances are that its a 12 * 100FSB and wont be compatible with a 133 FSB.

If you change the jumper back to 100 all that will happen is that your PC2100 memory will run as if it were PC1600.

You might find that there's an option to run the memory at HCLK+33 (host clock + 33MHz => 100 + 33 = 133)

However, this doesn't seem to make things any faster as running the memory asynchronously seems to increase latency on memory access.

So, if I acquire Fish's AMD 2GHz chip - is that compatible with an FSB of 133MHz?

Thought so

So ignoring the obvious performance enhancement from changing the cpu from 1200 to 2000 - what type of gain would I get from changing FSB speed from 100 to 133 MHz? Would I see an additional 33%? Bearing in mind also that the PC2100 memory isn't being used to it's full potential at the moment

I also overclocked the cpu last night (thanks to a chat with Fish) - got 1260 MHz

The plubming analogy is a good one.

Currently you have a small bucket and a small hose pipe filling it. (1200 and 100FSB)

You can put the same hose in a bigger bucket (2000 and 100) this will allow more in the bucket but ultimately wont get refilled as quick.

Moving to 133 will increase the width of the hose so the bucket fills quicker and the bucket being bigger (2000) allows it to hold more water than the smaller bucket.

If you see what I mean

Edited to appease the rampant pedarists...

There's a "b" in "Pluming"..... pluming B*****

Folks, don't try attaching a hosepipe to your PC - or, rather, if you do, don't try and sue PH!! Place poodles in microwaves at your own risk too......

Got it, but I fail to see where feathers come in to it?!

Thanks Plotloss!
