Any help much appreciated

Ok as some of you may know I've been offline for some time.

I tried setting up my router so that I could get online again today however it wouldn't let me.

It repeatedly said that the DNS could not connect to the server or something similar. After manually changing the DNS, the IP address and the subnet mask nothing changed. Nor did it change when I reset it to default settings (the network settings not the Xbox itself)

Also for some reason with my modem downstairs it works fine but take it upstairs with an extension and the Internet light on the front stops being illuminated (I assume this is why it doesn't allow me to connect)


So aside from being a massive spacktard and missing anything obvious, anyone have any ideas what I can try to sort it?

Any help much appreciated and of course complete piss taking if necessary is welcomed!

I can't help you, however, I enjoyed the challenge of getting into and reading this thread "with no title".

It may be that the extension cable you are using is knackered. Your internet company should help you set up the router if they did not supply one (otherwise you will get the "use our Router" response.)

If the problem is just DNS related try pinging 8.8.8.8 from your PC (Start -> Run/Search -> 'CMD'. Type 'ping 8.8.8.8' into the prompt.) If you receive replies set that as your DNS server - They are Google's so will work for Internet address no matter where you access the internet. If it times out then you have no internet.

Ah well cheers mods and thanks for the reply, I'll have a check of that later (posting from phone at current) if that doesn't solve it any other ideas? The extension cable was brand new about a week or so ago so I hope it isn't buggered already

Well if it works downstairs without the cable but not upstairs with it then either the cable is shagged, too long or crap quality.

Sounds entirely logical and I believe it was approx £1 for the cable so sounds definitely like crap quality well as long as its not anything serious I can't sort then all is well!

It could also be the length - a lot of ISPs specify the cable has to be less than 1/2 metre to be supported. You are best having a short cable from Socket to Router and long network cables than the other way round.......
