We have a large manual here at work that is burned onto CD in PDF and HTML format. Rather than use the standard IE 'Find' option, we would like a more intelligent way of searching with results produced in a list of relevance like all modern search engines.

Is there any freewhere or commercial software that can reside on the CD and search for you? An offline version of Google for example?

Any ideas appreciated

Depending on whether you want off the shelf or are happy to potter away in code for a few hours, you may want to take a look at Lucene.

I'm sure I remember when I last looked at it, there being an applet that uses it that you could embed within an HTML index page and point to an index included on the CD.

Perhaps check out something like DocSearcher

The Find facility in the latest Acrobat reader gives the ist of results with page number and a few words before and after, it's a damn sight better than a dumb text search facility.
