What sort of music does your son/you like?

Any music you download free will be people trying to sell their music, you'll not get any major bands offering their music for free. Never. Impossible. Check out smaller labels and the bands sites themselves and you'll get samplers/tracks, but these won't be up to much quality (i.e. encoding) or in number.

I admire your honesty not to download music (I don't) so can only suggest that you do as I and scour the cheap bins & places like www.play.com and www.amazon.co.uk for their special offers and pick up slightly older but still good CD and burn yourself. Then of course you have places like www.ebay.co.uk to get CD's second hand.

I have some 250 CD's, all MP3'd and on my iPod in this fashion and it's all music I love and can listen to while happy I've supported the artist involved. Most of my stuff is weird pop (Crash Test Dummies, Ellen Reid...) so I have to import, search all over for it but there you go (full list on my website if you're interested).

Either that or borrow music off other people, it's illegal but didn't you tape a CD that you liked and had borrowed off a friend?

I use Emule LSD as it allows you to search for an archive (zip) file and get a complete album rather than single tracks.

Probably not legal but neither is driving at 90mph on the motorway.

If you want some 100% legal tracks, download the samples from www.lilyfraser.com - a very talented (and pretty!) friend of mine.
