Hi,
Does anybody know of an application which can restrict upload / download volumes of up to 4 PCs sharing an ADSL connection? When backing up a laptop to a work server over VPN, this makes even browsing near impossible on the other PCs on the LAN.

The set up is as follows:

PC1 with XP pro, USB ADSL modem, shared internet conenction. connected to switch
PC2, XP Pro, connected to switch
Laptops 1 & 2 - XP Pro, connected to switch as & when required.

Wingate and CCProxy are two proxy apps that are listed as including bandwidth control..

It may be worth googling Proxy Server Bandwith control and seeing if anything is listed there..

AFAIK, BandWidth control isn't something you'd normally find in free Proxy apps, so I think you may well need to shell out for this sort of option..

Depending on how deep you want to get into it, you could have a Linux box set up as a router using iptables.

Iptables allows you to throttle bandwidth for clients. You can even let it burst but then tail off to an acceptable sustained rate.

You need to look for Bandwidth Limiting, or Bandwidth Shaping.

Thanks. Used to lose the Linux route, although this (and the laptops) was the only PC taken when my flat was burgled last week! I guess the box was a lot smaller than the towers, but happened to be the worst spec'd machine of the lot...
