I used to have some software that I could run which would pick up damaged files and repair them. It's just that my XP pro seems to be having an off day, I can't run windows update (it just sits therre looking without actually connecting) and cleandisk won't run (gets hung up at the 'compressing old files' bit)

If you google for that symptom of disk cleanup there is a fix.

You need to enter the registry and delete the key that refers to the compression step so cleanup bypasses it.

bugger! outlook keeps hanging and then what I wrote suddenly appears and PH takes ages to load a page. Ran Norton but it didn't find owt. I'm afraid I'm not techie enough for what you suggested Matt

done that, disk cleanup won't even boot up now
