Is it safe now to upgrade to iOS 6?
Discussion
Can't comment on the iPad but iOS 6 has completely fked my iPhone 4. It loses signal where it is strong and then tells me it needs to be restored but if you try that it completely cocks up the phone and I am left with a screen that says "connect to iTunes" and does fk all. Even the people in the apple shop haven't got a clue what's wrong with it. The only remedy is to switch it on/off about 15-30 times until it magically works again.
This is just my experience, though.

This is the first time I've ever had an issue. I've got an iMac and MacBook Air as well as an iPad from work which are all fine, I'm just annoyed that my phone constantly has a spaz since the upgrade to iOS 6 - it means I have to use my work blackberry out of hours which I resent as I end up checking emails etc..
I've had no problems at all on an iPad 3, but if you've waited this long you might want to wait a few more days as 6.1 is rumoured to be close to release (that's rare - an Apple rumour ).

I think some people are cursed with techno-gremlins. I update all my firmware whenever the new ones are available, right back to the original iPhone, and I've never had any problems
That describes me, if anything CAN go wrong with a gadget, car etc, then it WILL go wrong. Almost to the point that I've resigned myself to a life with a Nissan Micra and a Nokia 3310 (joke).FWIW OP I've not upgraded ours to iOS 6 yet. As said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I waited until the Google Maps app came out, and I'm glad I did. The Apple effort is still very poor, with whole towns still mislabelled. I also don't like the very muted colours they use, although that's personal - other may like it. The shame is that other apps that use the iOS mapping now have to use Apple Maps too.
Overall, there's not much difference from iOS 5.

On ipad 3, it's borked Home Sharing quite badly on both music and video which is its main use in our house.
Lots on the Apple forums about the above.
I think the main issue is that the majority of issues people are having after moving to IOS6 are being completely ignored by Apple, despite having numerous threads on their support forums that are heavily modded but ignored by Apple tech support. I spoke to them a couple of days ago and they wouldn't acknowledge the home sharing issues despite me pointing them to a dozen threads....
Given the option, I'd go back to IOS5.

As long as you've got the .ipsw file for IOS5, you can downgrade by option-clicking the "upgrade" button; it lets you browse to the firmware you want to install.Lots on the Apple forums about the above.

I was quite surprised the Apple shop when the guy just shrugged his shoulders in a "you're fked" sort of way when I described my problem. Someone else there looked like they wanted to help a bit more but the manager took him away to deal with something else. Oh well, hopefully my new iphone will be ok - this one has lasted 2 years to be fair.Lots on the Apple forums about the above.

Two issues on my ipad 3 (MD366B) since iOS 6
1. Connections with my home wifi is patchy and just frustrating. Apple's 'solution' is to remove security from the network - it then remains connected. Unfortunately, as well as being plain stupid, no security means the time capsule will not connect over wifi.
2. I didn't know this till I read about it above. iMessages are received on my iPhone only, not any other devices using my apple ID. Des it need enabling somewhere.
FTR all devices have latest firmware.
