Basically, you decrypt the DVD, shrink the output files to <4.7Gb and then burn the result to a blank DVD.
Visit www.afterdawn.com for a good forum offering all sorts of more hardware specific advice.
The best bit of advice I can offer is to get yourself a blank RW disk - mistakes are aplenty to start with.
I use www.dvddecrypter.com, never failed me yet.

Right, thanks for the tips, with a bit of luck I'm saving a DVD to the harddrive as I type 
Now stage 2, getting it back out onto another blank DVD, whats the difference between DVD-R & DVD+R
Do I need to worry about it, the disc I'm copying off is a DVD-R
Well thats lost me
Used DVD Decrypter, I seem to have copied loads of file to the harddrive, no idea what they are, how do I get them back to one file that runs the 'movie'
I've got a copy of Nero 6 sat on disc on the table but it keeps asking me for a serial number and all I seem to have is a 'key gen'
anyone care to point me in the direction of a little help

+R's tend to write faster. In my experience, older home dvd players seem happier with -R's although newer players don't seem to mind on which format is used.
-R's are usually that bit cheaper, keep your eyes on Dabs.com they have some pretty good regular offers.
It's also worth paying the little extra for a named brand of discs.

Woah - Slow down a bit.
If the *cough* original you're backing up is a -R, all you need to do is a disc copy or copy the two folders (Audio_TS and Video_TS) to your hard drive and then burn them back to a blank disc. Whoever lent you the disc has already disposed of the anti-copy protection - as far as you're concerned, it's purely data.

Right copied the audio TS and Video TS files over, but I still can't seem to work out a way to play the files from the harddrive
Must get a RW disc at the weekend as I can see this taking a few goes to get right
