Had two updates recently, and I've not lost any data from my phone.

Is the phone rooted at all?

I haven't a clue if it's rooted. My lady has the same phone, she lost a downloaded app (recipe/cooking app) and her contacts button vanished from the front screen after last update.
I guess next time it flashes up "firmware download required" we just ignore it.

On the S2, in "software-update" menu, you can just turn "servermessages" and "automatic updates" off.

All-in-all, it's not normal you're actually losing contacts. An icon I can imagine, if an app is updated (like for example the "contacts" app), sometimes it is uninstalled and then reinstalled.

Your contracts should also be synced with your gmail account as well. If toy go into the contacts list do they all have a g next to them? If not then you could press menu and select merge with Google and this should copy them into your gmail. Iirc Samsung defaults to saving to your phone or the sim rather than gmail.
