Discussion

Can I back this up a step and hijack thread for my own needs - am curious how you got the 98 laptop to connect properly in the first place. I have just installed a wireless router which gets on very well with my desktop running Xp. However the laptop running 98 shows on the wireless icon as being connected but internet explorer just keeps coming back "a connection with the server could not be established".
You seem to be one step further along than me and would be eternally greatful if you can shed some light from your experiences.

Make sure you use network login on 98 machine( you can use a blank password and 98 will auto login for you). Add the user name and password (even if its blank) that you login on the 98 machine to the user list in the XP machine(in control panel). If any machine connects to an XP share it will need to send a username and password XP will then look in its own account databse to see if this is a valid XP user if not then no sharey my files.

I tend to use windows 2000 more than XP and I'm at home so I can't get in front of an XP machine. So this will not be exact but
Goto control panel and look for users and groups then add user from there. If you have it set for classic view then its in Administrative tools -> computer management -> local users and groups. I think. XP home should be very similar.
All else fails goto start menu select help and type "add user" into the question box that should find something.

OK admin > computer mgt > local user.. added new user ok. Used laptop's network name, and mirrored its login password. But this doesnt seem to help the 98se laptop see this XP box.. all I can see that's new is a new user on the XP login screen. Or have I (quite possibly) missed something?

you need to share the folder or drive that you want access to.
Right click on a folder and select sharing and security. Click share this folder give it a name and check that the permissions allow the 98 user in. Its the same procedure if you want to share the entire drive. Just right click the drive letter and goto sharing and security

get to msdos(command) prompt on 98 machine and type
"net config"
it should tell you the user that is logged on. does this match the XP user you created (must be exact).
did you share a drive. you can share printers to (for testing)
Xp account I created is named Lucy
if i net config the laptop it's
Computer name \LUCY
User name LUCY
workgroup WORKGROUP
just change the account to administrator to see if that helps.
yup set a folder thats in my docs (on XP bpx) as a share, 'My-Videos'
