For example, when in Google, if I start to type Pistonheads, all the other phrases come up beginning with 'p' in alphabetical order, including Pistonheads.

How do I delete all these words/phrases and stop them coming up?

This is actually a feature of your browser, not of Google. On Internet Explorer go to Tools menu; select Internet Options; select the Contents tab. Under Personal select AutoComplete. Click on Clear Forms. You can also uncheck the Forms box in this same window to keep this from occurring in the future.

I uae an assortment of tidying up software - purely to keep my system free from clutter that would otherwise slow it down.

You could download Window Washer 5.0 from Webroot - clears out all sorts of crud, cookies, PH adware history, recents etc.
