I want to connect my Sky HD box to t'internet for Sky Anytime, and connect a new smart tv I am getting, to internet. Problems are:

TV and Sky box located in a room where the wireless internet signal is very patchy, and only one plug socket in the wall where tv/sky box is kept. At the moment I have an 8 socket surge protected gang socket plugged into wall socket, and run tv,sky, hi fi etc off that. Done this for years without issue.

Was thinking of going down the ethernet route. Can I use an ethernet thru socket as below. Can I use 2 of them (called A & B), A plugged into wall with ethernet cable to sky box, B plugged into the A with ethernet cable plugged into tv, and gang socket plugged into B. Or is that a bit dodgy.

You will need a Powerline adapter connected to your router (via Ethernet) and plugged in near by. Then something like you've shown in your post connected to an Ethernet switch (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-Prosafe-Ethernet-Unmanaged-Switch/dp/B00009015U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364142098&sr=8-1) and from that switch to all your Ethernet capable devices.

If you need an Ethernet switch with more ports they're available; just search Amazon for 'Netgear Ethernet Switch.'

I've found Netgear ones of these to be pretty poor, although that was a few years ago.

Used some Devolo ones recently and they work a treat

Pretty sure you can get a 'through' socket with 3 ports. If not get a network switch box rather than doubling up the power line things.

I swear by the zyxek ones. I have the 500meg versions with the gig ethernet ports , avoid the ones with the 100meg ports as they are too slow.

I get throughput of ~220 meg and stream HD movies over it. The speed you get will vary depending on your house wiring.

At the TV end I have the zyxel powerline plugged in, then a 6 way mutli socket plugged into its mains pass through socket. I have a gigbit ethernet 5 port switch behind the telly and need all 5 ports for various devices.

At the broadband end in my office I also have a 6 way multi socket plugged into the zyxel and an 8 port gig e switch.

This is the one, £71 with free shipping for a pair

http://www.ebuyer.com/339241-zyxel-pla4215-500mbps...

these are the gige ones, the 100meg ethernet ones are cheaper but it seems pointless to me buying a 500meg device then limiting it to 100meg through the ethernet.

Mods, you've moved this to computers, gadgets and stuff but my query relates to smart tv and sky anytime. I think I'd get better responses is it was left where I put it!

I recently bought powerline adapters to network the sky box. Works perfectly well with the adaptor plugged into an extension cable with the rest of the plugs for the stuff in the TV cabinet. The two adapters are in the same room, though. I also tried plugging another into the office, but got worse performance than the current arrangement of Ethernet over phone cable. The office is part of the extended bit of the house, the room with the other adapters isn't.

Technically, the question is around powerline networking, so you are far more likely to get a response here, as you have, just above.

I use powerline adapters.. I have one by the TV that feeds a 4-way splitter for the TV, sky box, apple TV, and the blueray player. All works fine.

I faffed with the powerline solution for a while. While it was okay, it was not brilliant. I guess it'd be fine if you are living in a relatively modern house with decent wiring, however if you're in a victorian or similar property with wiring that's a bit out of date, then I would really have a think abount running a dedicated ethernet cable from your router to the telly room. You'll only need the one cable with an internet switch at the other end so you can plug in TV / Sky / xbox etc. At least then it'ss be done, maximum speed and good connection.
