Discovery 4 - Using an iPod (Shuffle)

I wasn't sure where to post this - it's maybe better suited to the gadgets bit ...
... I'm also very new to things involving iPods so be gentle with me.
The iPod shuffle came with a short lead with a USB at one end ...
... and I thought I could play this in the car by plugging it in the centre console bit and selecting USB as a source. No worky.
Do I need a new wire with the Apple connector and to select iPod as the source?
