Good email clients I had experience with are Thunderbird, KMail and the Mozilla suite's.
KMail however, does only work with X11 desktops. They're all open source and free

Thunderbird is a recent project that developed from the Mozilla email client. The Mozilla email client has a long history and dates back to the Netscape email client. Kmail is part of the K Desktop Environment and works very good as a stand alone client, as well as a part of the KDE Personal Information Management.
