I know it sounds obvious but have you checked the volume?

I don't think an MP3 codec will make a difference.

What version of Windows Media Player do you have?

It'll have MP3 as standard. Double click the loudpeaker icon in the system tray (by the clock) and check that the Wave output is not muted (box at the bottom) and the volume slider is at least part way up (try about half). CD-Audio and Wave out are two different sources so may explain why it plays CD-A but not Wave (MP3 etc)

Volume on full. As I said I can hear any CD's I play.
I'm running version 8.00.

Having been looking around in the past few minutes I found a couple of things on Google.
Do you think I need DIV X or Cyberlink Power DVD?

I haven't a clue and would appreciate any help.

Tried to watch 'The Italian Job' last night, good movie but no sound!

I needed PowerDVD before my retro-fitted DVD Writer would work.
