Windoze Media Player 10 is free and plays DVDs (at least for me - you might need codecs from elsewhere).

got myself a pucka copy of PowerDVD v4.. bit old but might well do the trick (dont want bells & whistles.. just decent playback). Will let you know how I get on thanks all!
