I use a 5 year old PC at work with a Freeserve ISP through a dialup internal modem.

The internet connection no longer functions.

If I try to dialup, it tells me it can't get a dialtone.

I tested the phone socket and that works OK with the office fax machine.

I replaced the cable that runs from the modem to the phone socket. No joy.

I then replaced the modem. Still won't work.

I tried using Explorer to open up another ISP, but the computer just won't dial up.

Looking at the modem with the case off the PC reveals that there is a little green LED on the modem which lights up when the PC is switched on.

I also believe that I can hear the modem trying to dialup, but it is very faint and not the usual dial up racket.

The PC now crashes when I hit "connect" to start the dialup.

Otherwise the PC seems to function without problem.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Quite often this is caused by adware/spyware.

Download and run AdAware from www.lavasoft.de/

It's free.
