I bought a new PC in May from one of the "big" manufacturers. (No names but sounds fresh). It's a fast and powerful machine and seemed good value.

After a few weeks it crashed completely. After much debate on the telephone with "technical support" they told me to send back the hard drive. This I did and it was faulty and they replaced it.

A couple of weeks ago it crashed again. Again, discussions with tech support ensued and the upshot this time was that I should send the whole tower back. Conclusion : faulty hard drive! which was replaced and, after 10 days, I got my machine back.

This is very frustrating as it is my only PC at work so I have to nick the ne from home each time it crashes which pisses off the kids.

If it goes again can I reject it as unfit for purpose?

One thing is for sure, I will never again buy a computer from anybody who is not local to me.

I worked for a large PC company as General Manager. We shipped out about 25,000 complete systems per year.

When I set up the tech support department, I introduced a 'Three hits and your out' policy. 3 related faults and you get a new pc or your money back.

For you to get 2 faulty hard drives is really rare, perhaps your motherboard or power supply is causing the problems.

Hard drives are very reliable, so always look for other components supplying wrong voltages etc which could blow the H/d.

Pain in the butt, but if it goes again, demand a swap out rather than a return to base repair.

Unfortunately, the computer business runs to such tight margins, there are sooooo many dodgy gits as customers that it is very difficult to provide a good level of service.

We had towers coming back with faults such as 'wont bboot up'.

Upon investigation there would be no components inside the tower.

Customer would swear blind it was complete when they sent it - what could we do?

£600 tower system down the drain as we had to replace it!

You can normaly reject items after returning them 3 times, or rather on the third occasion. I did this with Dixons a couple of years ago although they had a "No Lemons" policy. The store manager wasn't happy about it but i got a new laptop out of them and the old one was 11 months old. I have heard of other people successfully rejecting goods after 2 or 3 repairs.
