My sister has a 2 year old Compaq Presario 2100 which failed last summer and they replaced the harddrive to fix.

This summer she says it's doing the same thing, so I've decided to have a go.

Finally managed to capture the BSOD message to find the code KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR and STOP CODE 0x0000007A. Machine then reboots and get 'operating system not found'.

The Micros**t support pages basically blame everyman and their dog (see www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/reskit/en-us/prmd_stp_fvlq.asp).

Anyone got any experience of troubleshooting this error and what is most likely cause.

My plan 1) Install AV and run check 2) Reinstall OS (managed to get all important data off).

Problem is getting the AV scan to run before it hangs.

Last time I had one of these in the workshop, it was indeed the hard drive.

However, it may be worth running memtest to eliminate memory hardware. If it comes up with any errors, replace the memory.

Can you read the I/O status code, the second parameter given 0x00007A? That will tell you a bit more

My guess is a screwed hard disk or hard disk controller.

The BSOD lasts for such a short time, I was very happy to get the messages I have. I'll film it tonight and then go frame by frame to get the full screen

Well the AV check came out clean.

However the chkdsk with the recovery disk showed there was a number of unrecoverable errors...

Now how the heck do I replace a HDD in a laptop? I can do it in a desktop no problem

On many laptops there is a cover about 3" long on the side, front or back somewhere which you can remove (usually held on by 1 screw) to reveal the hard drive. Then just grab the drive and pull it out.

Others have a cover on the underside of the laptop which can again be taken off the reveal the drive.

Once it's out, the rest will be obvious.

But you have to replace both occurrances of xx in the above link with ph

For some reason with ph in, the link goes haywire!!
