Please bear with me as I am a computer numptie...

At home, I have five computers, three teenage sons, who all have a computer in their bedrooms, plus mine and Mrs WRacers all linked via a server to BT ADSL...

I linked them all up by wire, a couple of years ago which involved drilling through walls, floorboards, etc, quite an involved job, although I did make quite a neat job of it.....

The problem is, my eldest son is now at University, sharing a flat with 3 other lads, they all have computers in their bedrooms, (3 upstairs, one downstairs) and he wants me to come down and link them up via a router..

I explained that the landlord (private) would not take kindly to holes being drilled all over his property, so it seems wireless is the way to go....

So, the question is, does this system work OK, what would I need to buy, (I suppose the lads would have to buy their own network card for each computer), and how much is the whole setup lightly to cost, and can you recommend any particular make which would be simple for a numptie to install....

The lads are all fairly genned up as they are all doing computer courses, and my son is into his second year in softwear engineering.....

Thanks in advance.........

So what you need is a

Linksys WAG54G Wireless router and ADSL modem combined. Its about £50. Right out of the box it should work. You'll need to configure it (simple) and name your Wireless network (also simple).

You then need Wireless networking cards in each PC. I suggest Linksys ones. Although at home I use BT voyager cards.

Job done.

BTW: There *are* two Wireless networking standards. ("b"/"g") The router supports BOTH (simultaeneously) so there's no need to worry...

I will say this: The performance of Wireless networking can be a bit variable. It is also not unknown for some Wireless kit to plain not work - and another identical box from the same manufacturer to work fine. If it doesn't do what it says on the tin TAKE IT BACK!

Pretty much what Don said, definately get "G" cards. Setup is pretty simple, you shouldn't have any problems.

My 3Com 54G card and router sometimes drops out for no apparent reason with sustained data transfer, but a reboot solves that.

G definitely but I'd go for Netgear stuff as its always been reliable for me. In contrast I've swapped out a number of dead D-Link and Linksys stuff.

ISP recommendation would be Nildram brilliant service!

Netgear fan myself. I would go for a DG834G wireless router/adsl modem/firewall/switch (about £60-70 IIRC) and then either WG511 cards for laptops or WG311 cards for desktops.

I've just sent up a netgear DG834G router, 4 WG511 pc cards and a WG311 pci card to my neice up in Edingburgh to set up in their shared student house. I was expecting a call to go up and set it up for them but the 5 young ladies managed to get it up and running all by themselves so it can't be that difficult

Rather than a new topic, I'd tack my question onto this thread...

I've got a netgear cable modem/router at home that is set up and working fine and my girlfriends work laptop connects to the net no problem through a standard 10/100 cable. Unfortunately its locked down by her works admin so I cant put a wireless network card in it.

To use it remote from the modem/router, without a direct connection, what would I need in terms of routers/hubs etc? Any help gratefully accepted.

if it's not centrino and you can't get a wireless card in then you can't use it wirelessly

Not stricly true, since you can buy a ethernet to wireless bridge which will do the job and NOT require any driver installation on the laptop.

You just connect the laptop to the bridge via cat5 and the laptop sees the wireless network.

I use the first one to allow my SliMP3 (www.slimdevices.com) work over wifi
