Just been advised by my boss that he wants me to redesign the company web site and produce it. Now I have some DTP experience but no knowledge of web design. Potentially I have access to either FrontPage or Dreamweaver and can usually manage to find my way round a program.

It will be a fairly simple web design - just an extension of our corporate brochure but he wants to be able to update it on a regular basis.

So which route - FrontPage or Dreamweaver?

And can anyone recommend any good reference books.

everyone will immediatly tell you to use Dreamweaver as Frontpage isn't the best to use. But, IMHO, FP isn't all that bad.

Yes once you start using FP's inbuilt stuff then it falls on it's arse badly (stuff like the flashy buttons) but for general fiddle you can't beat it (for a newbie, assuming familarity with Office products.

This is the internet, since we techies use the internet all the reference material you will ever need is available online.

When you say reference, what exactly are you after?

Dreamweaver produces better code. If it is available use it.

For hints and tips.

Find a nice site, right click, view source

IMO Dreamweaver doesn't produce nicer code. When you ask it do do complicated stuff, or more importantly work with Fireworks (Macromedia's Graphics package?) it breaks things down into stupid and unweildy code.

For the simple stuff, FP is easier to use (no damned floating toolbars) and the code it produces in such circumstances is spot on, but far from perfect I admit however.

Having said that, I code by hand usually and use FP simply for formatting text

Dreamweaver, I used to use Frontpage, recently tried Dreamweaver and it's a vast improvement. This is from the point of view of designing a relatively simple site.
