I keep getting a " ~ " appearing on my desktop together with a Microshaft logo. I have no idea where it comes from and the computer is happy to send it to the recycling bin. Does anyone know what it means?

Does it by any chance appear when you start up outlook or outlook express?

I get one in the root of my C drive that outlook creates. God alone knows what it's for.

No clues at all where they come from. Generally about 900-920kb in size.

from the command line, type

set

Have a look at your variables and make sure the temp variable is set, if not, post back which OS you are on and someone will tell you how to set it.

These are the scratch files that Microsoft applications create when you open a document - Word, Excel, Powerpoint, whatever. MS applications create these in the same directory the original document is in. (Try editing a Word document in C:TEMP and after you've opened it, look in the directory). If you open a document on your desktop, that's where the scratch files go.
