I upgraded to a gig of ram .... normal for the faster processing power?
More RAM does not get you "faster processing power". It increases the chances of the data the processor wants being in memory rather than on disk, so it might spend less time waiting for data (or more time at full throttle if you like).
If you're in the habit of working it quite hard, I suppose there could be a noticable difference in heat generation. Was the hard disk thrashing away all the time before the upgrade?
Chris is right.
Have you changed where you use the laptop? Having it on a soft surface tends to make it run hotter.
Other than that, brilliant as these machines are (I have a Ti and an Al version) they do run very hot. Only truly laptops if you have asbestos skin!
Edited to note that they are infamous for running with the fan on a lot. Check out the Apple support forums...

You should think about getting an ilap.

I picked one up recently and think they are worth it. No more toasted lap syndrome and they are supposed to help the powerbook ventilate better too.
