I've inherited a PC running Windows Me, what is the difference between this and Win 98? And could I get away with putting XP on the machine. It has a celeron 800mhz processor with 128mb ram and a 38GB hard drive.

There is a prob with the 56k modem as it is only running at 28.8 (other laptop on same line runs at 45ish most of the time) I've been told that there was a prob with ME machines and modem speeds - I've updated windows but still no joy.
Hope this makes sense!
Any help/advice appreciated
Ta.

ME is Windows '98 'in a skirt' - same product underneath. www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/windowsmefaq.html#How+is+the+new explains this in more detail.

Windows XP is a different product altogether (and is based on Windows NT).

You should be able to get away with running XP though personally I'd add memory to make it run more comfortably.

Are you sure you've got the correct drivers for ME?

Darren.

Thanks for the replies

Yes - correct drivers. I was told that I needed to download a patch from the Windows Update site - but none of the stuff that I downloaded seems to have made any difference. Will consider more memory (another 128mb?).
Ho hum...slow connection at home is made even more obvious when I'm using broadband at work (need to spend more time on the PC at work then!??)
