Can anyone recommend software that can do the following? Obviously not one software that can do all.

* Monitors Server Hardware performance, something better than PERFMON.
* Compares System Differences, i.e. comparing one servers O/S and apps files/dll's to another. Does SYSDIFF do this?
* A good network monitoring package, software or blackbox solution. Would like to see network utilisation on each network/subnet including a packet sniffer, possibly.

BTW, the OS is Windows 2000 Server and/or Advanced Server.

Any help would be great.

What hardware is it? The major vendors do monitoring software for their hardware - eg HP Insight manager.

Microsoft MOM keeps an eye on any problems with the OS, SMS can manage software images and versions.

Packeteer is an example of software to manage, monitor and log network usage, sniffer by NAI can sniff packets.

We have just implemented a HP SAN solution which we do use Insight Manager on but the servers I wish to monitor and run performance tests on are not in that environment and in a seperate 2000 domain running on Compaq Proiliant boxes with no Insight Manager currently installed. Do I need to install the Insight card or can I just add another PC/Server to that domain and install the software?

Thanks, not sure I need MOM in this case. SMS might be a bit overkill for this task but will look at it, haven't used this for a years, we're too small in user size to run SMS here, I think I might see if SYSDIFF can do what I want first.

We did have Packeteer in for a demo once, is this the blackbox solution? Are there any other solutions/models so I can do a comparison against? Will look at the NAI sniffer, thanks. Been using Ethereal when required.

Thanks alot for the info.

You don't need the Remote Insight Board, just SNMP installed and then the insight agents on top of that, all software based, and Free

Exactly; you only need the RIB installing if you want to be able to get to the server if it develops a fault or something (has to be on its own network).

Just the Insight Agents and away you go...

For network monitoring you could try:
Q1 Labs that does everything....and more!
