Craig, sorry mate I haven't done pre sales for a while now, but a couple of recommendations for brands:
Toshiba are very good, as are IBM. Don't let the fact IBM made some Thinkpads that were real nails afew years ago cloud your mates judgement, they really are very good now.
Dell are good too. Their after sales is excellent.
In my opinion, HP have gone downhill a bit. This Compaq EVO I'm using here is awful.
Sony I can't comment on, not exactly a mainstream player I don't think. Style over substance perhaps? Maybe thats a bit harsh.

Hi Craig - There is a samsung P28 which is exclusive to www.microanvika.co.uk (or their shops on Tottenham Ct Rd) it has a pentium M 1.6, 40GB 512MB 15" screen 802.11g etc and it is only £799 including VAT from them. it is a hell of a lot of laptop from a known brand for not too much money. it is not a pretty as some of them, but I have bought 6 this week and all seem to be great. good luck
