USB 2.0 / Firewire 400 External HDD's

Quick question.....

Are USB 2.0 / Firewire 400 External HDD's typically fast enough to rip/edit/compress digital video on?

Running short on space and like the idea of portability so i can use it at home and work - that way work will pay for it

you will get more speed out of the USB than you will typically from the HDD itself (unless going for top end SATA!)

Firewire 800 is out now, which is faster than mosy physical drives on the planet.
