HELP Printers

Some of my printers have stopped working. They are all networked through a Win 2000 Server. The Share permissions are fine but only I as domain admin can print all other people can't the document goes to the server says it printing then fails. Most of the error codes are win32 error 3003. Which I don't undertsnad. I've now been on hold to HP for 27mins.

The strange thing is they were fine untill I tried to install two new printers today after the restart they have gone tits up. There is one printer that is still working but I can't see why that is and others aren't. I'm guessing it is a permissions thing.

Are there any other permisiions locations other than in the printers that relate to the printers?

In the Event Log what is the Event ID that is throwing the 3003?

EDIT: From reading Google Groups it seems the most likely culprit is a knackered Jet Direct card...

If its not that check the security of the spooler directory at:

Winnt\system32\spool\printers

nothing looks odd, now throught to HP

I reckon its the Jet Direct thats knackered then...

Can you ping the printer?

Yep can ping them all, there are about five that don't work. Strangely one does thought

Do they all have different IP addresses?

Silly I know but its now sounding like there is a network conflict somewhere...

I did have a conflict between a manualy set printer and a DHCP address pool. HAve disconected the manual printer totaly

As a thought I haven't restarted the main DNS and DHCP server although I can't see this would make much of a difference

Yes they all now have diffent DHCP set addresses

Rights it is permissions because if I set a normal user who can't print as a domain admin they can then print.

Any thoughts where these permissions can be changed.

On your Server...

Go to printers - right click on the printer - go to properties.

Security Tab

Give print access to group or individuals...

Done all that and i still doesn't work. I can get it to work if I install them as a local printer to an IP addressed port however if I use the HP wizard it won't work.

I spy an early mourning and I'll give them all static IPs and set them up manually.

Just reserve the addresses in DHCP. Much easier this way. Also much easier with static IPs on printers generally.

You also know that you don't necessarily have to send all of your print jobs through the Windows Server. If your HP print server is on the network, why not just create the printer on each workstation? Exceedingly slight chance of somebody sending a print job outside the network - but I doubt it.

Oh, and as alluded to - static IP's on print servers are the way to go...
