256Mb - £600 :(

Ive got a Dell 8200 which takes RD rambus ram.
thankfully, its exclusivity in design makes it 600 for 256Mb - and you have to buy in pairs...

Anyone know of an old dell 8200 knocking around that I could snatch the mem from??

£600! Ouch! I bought two 512mb sticks for my powerbook and it all came to about £150

It's RD Rambus memory… it was used on early P4 systems, but there were some quirks. It was expensive to produce, and IIRC Intel designed and the cost increased as they licenced the technology to certain people, keeping the prices up.

It was quickly superceeded by DDR…. Leaving Rambus in the shade… hence the cost.

Stooz - be carefull, the Dell 8200 was made with two different speeds of memory - 400 and 533MHz FSB… make sure you get the right one.

I've got a Compaq W8000 P4 Xeon that I'm using now, this uses RDRAM at the above mentioned stupid prices.

I sourced an extra 256mb from ebay at a very reasonable £55. You don't have to buy it in pairs though, you just use a CRIMM card. A CRIMM card is a blank RDRAM card and it fools the PC into thinking there is a pair installed. Search ebay for RDRAM and CRIMM.
As stated above beware of speed though. Mine takes 400mhz.

Basicaly intel and Rambus tried to shaft the world on memory.

Intel got xxx stock in rambus (an IP only company) if they shipped boards with rambus memory. So Intel pushes the world into rambus, ramnus stock goes up, both make a packet.

Except the reso of the world decided it was pants and told em to get stuffed. Havnt seen any for sale for ages sorry.

Check with my usual suppliers for PC bits, most are not bothering with it due to lack of demand.

Check the original order spec sheet… or put in the express service code / service tag into the Dell support centre and it should tell you there...

If no joy, surely you could just get 533 part(s) and they'd work at 400? Haven't used the stuff myself, so don't know if this would work.
